In World of Tanks, each nation has a somewhat distinctive pro and cons. One nation may exceed the others in brutal firepower, another in armor and so on. In World of Warships it’s not that black and white. There are some general rules of thumbs, but some tiers differs.

US Navy destroyers are relying very heavily on their guns. They do have torpedoes, and at the lower tiers, they got launchers of both side of the ship. That means you can fire a volley, turn around and launch another. That changes from tier 6 with the Farragut.

The damage and range on American torpedoes are not impressive. Their guns turn rate and fire rate on the other hand is amazing.

Imperial Japanese Navy destroyers were build to be just torpedo boats. Many have multi purpose guns, but they were build at a time where the aerial threat were slow biplanes back in the 30’s. That means not only are the guns very slow at turning, they have an impressive low fire rate too. The guns are slightly larger, so they do hit a bit more. Still nothing to rely on.

Their true advantage are their torpedoes. They do roughly twice the damage of the Americans and got a far longer range. Most often the range is longer than the spotting range, so you can launch torpedoes without getting spotted. Hitting targets at those long ranges, 7-10 kilometers, can however be quite tricky.

If your play style is the more aggressive one, the US line may be a good option for you.

If you prefer to be sneaky and hit targets from long range with torpedoes, the Japanese navy would be for you. Those main turrets really are just to be used when they are conveniently aimed at your target.

At the various guns and torpedoes it may say 2×3 or 4×3 or something else. The first numbers tells the amounts of turrets. In case of torpedoes, it’s the amount of launchers. The second number means, on guns, the amounts of cannons and torpedoes the amounts of tubes.

3×2 on guns means a total of 3 turrets and 2 guns on each turret; a combined firepower of 6 firing guns.

4×2 on torpedoes means 4 launchers each having 2 tubes, giving a total of 8 torpedoes. Normally when you have 4 launchers, it’s 2 on each side of the ship.

Stat comparison between US and IJN destroyers from tier 2 to 10

This comparison is solely on the stats on paper. All numbers are on fully upgraded ships, and in case of more hulls, the last one would be used (hull c if a, b and c).

When you have more hulls to choose between, it’s because one may be more specialized than the other in a specific direction. That could be less main turrets for superior AA defense or vice versa or something completely different.

Some places, like Survivability and Artillery are marked with a number, x/100 at first. Those are telling how well the ship is at a range of 1 to 100. The higher the better.

Numbers marked in red are the superior stat over the other nation. If neither of the numbers are marked, it’s because they’re tie.

AA Firing Range is shown with just 1 number. Most ships got different types of AA guns with varying ranges. The shown range is the maximum range of the shortest firing guns. That is because it’s the maximum range of full DPS, where all the guns fire.
